Associate Professor Marcio Serelle

Visiting Research Fellow
Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies

Marcio Serelle is Associate Professor of Media Studies in the School of Communication and Arts at the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais. In the first semester of 2015, he will be a visiting scholar at the Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies, undertaking a fellowship from Capes (a Foundation affiliated with the Ministry of Education of Brazil). His current research considers Graeme Turner´s concept of the “demotic turn” and investigates how common people participate and are represented in Brazilian media culture nowadays. This research is concerned with the cultural and political meanings of the media participation of common people, as they are often under the logic of celebrification, entertainment and consumption. This demotic turn has very particular contours in the Brazilian context, given the social and economic transformations in the country in the passage of the 21st century.
