Elizabeth has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Tasmania and is a recent graduate from Griffith University where she studied a Master of Arts in Visual Art. Elizabeth practices full time as a visual artist and actively engages in a busy exhibition program. Elizabeth is passionate about drawing and uses iconography of dresses to explore themes of memory and identity. Elizabeth documents her own clothing which she regards as an ongoing self portrait. In addition to presenting a paper at the conference an exhibition of Elizabeth's work will be held in Brisbane at the QUT Art Museum.
My topic will outline the role of clothing in Visual Arts Practice. My presentation will include a visual display of a suite of drawings titled 'drawing on my memory' and will progressively discuss the symbolism of each of the drawings. An exhibition of the works to be discussed is planned to coincide with this conference. Within my studio, my drawings specifically address personal memory by using iconographies of clothing. In my presentation, I will discuss how each of the drawings address issues of identity through the use of personal images of clothing. The presentation will also look at the role of clothing in personal memory and how the artworks explore the rites of passage between childhood, adolescence and womanhood. The artworks displayed on the slides are a suite of drawings which act as an autobiographical account of my life from infancy to adulthood. This is achieved by fine rendered drawings of my clothing over the period of my life. I will finish my presentation by discussing the significance of documenting the dresses through drawing.
